Background: Previous studies have reported the association between serum uric acid levels and diabetes mellitus. This study aimed to investigate the association between serum uric acid levels and glycemic control in patients with diabetes mellitus.
Methods: This study analyzed the data of 1,588 adults aged ¡Ã19 years with diabetes mellitus, who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2016?2018. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of poor glycemic control (glycated hemoglobin ¡Ã6.5%) according to the serum uric acid levels were calculated using multivariable logistic regression analysis.
Results: Prevalence of hyperuricemia was 12.7% among the patients with diabetes mellitus. After adjusting for confounding variables, an increase of 1 mg/dL in the serum uric acid level was found to be associated with poor glycemic control among the total participants (OR, 1.12; 95% CI, 1.02?1.24) and the male participants (OR, 1.21; 95% CI, 1.05?1.38). Moreover, presence of hyperuricemia in males was associated with increased risk of poor glycemic control (OR, 1.85; 95% CI, 1.05?3.27).
Conclusion: High serum uric acid levels were associated with poor glycemic control in patients with diabetes mellitus. Especially in males, increase in serum uric acid levels and presence of hyperuricemia were independently associated with an increased risk of poor glycemic control.
